Hawai'i paddlers triumph in Tahiti

Team Kai Makana, featuring seven paddlers from Hawai‘i, won the women’s division of the Hawaiki Nui Va‘a last week in Tahiti.

Kai Makana completed the 40.5-kilometer course in a record time of 3 hours, 18 minutes, 20 seconds. The team consisted of seven paddlers from Hawai‘i and three from Tahiti. Hawai‘i paddlers were Lisa Livingston, Monica Seager, Tricia Nagatani, Donna Kahakui, Meghan Clark, Patty Eames and Jessie Eames.

Kihei Canoe Club of Maui placed seventh at 3:37:52.

In the men’s division, Team Ocean Club Hawai‘i placed seventh out of 86 teams. In three long-distance races held over three days, Ocean Club Hawai‘i finished 14th, ninth, and fourth, respectively. Te Pae Ti‘a, a club from Rangiroa, won two of the three races to place first overall.

Ocean Club Hawai‘i, which featured five paddlers from Moloka‘i Hoe champion Lanikai, was the only entry from Hawai‘i, and the top-placing non-Tahitian team.
